HOW CAN KALENJIN COMPETE, COLLABORATE AND CO CREATE THE FUTURE ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES?

HOW CAN KALENJIN COMPETE, COLLABORATE AND CO CREATE THE FUTURE ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES?
The environment holds resources for the future and is closely linked with the country’s economy, thus remaining to be a hot topic in the economic discussions.  Environment cannot be separated from other resources thus the need to make economic decisions that take in account the welfare of the future generation. Environmental issues are addressed at regional, national and international levels.
Major environmental issues are land use, pollution, climate change, habitat destruction, energy conservation, overpopulation, species conservation among other issues that face enormous threat due to human inhabitation and encroachment to the natural ecosystems. Kalenjin ought to contend, amalgamate and co-create on the variant fronts to protect and conserve the future for the forthcoming generation.
LAND USE
Land use being one of the critical environmental issues, facing an exponential threat to becoming the world’s top environmental issue. Land is a basic factor of production and forms the basis of other factors of production, set at the centre connecting other issues on environment. Land use  is having a transformative upshot on the planet and is based on the functional dimension of land for different human purposes or economic activities with the major divisions being agricultural use, dwellings, industrial use, transport, recreation use or nature protection area. With nearly 30% of the world’s land surface is now in use and exponential amount of ecosystems are converted each year.
There are variant land use practices in Kalenjin but with same outcome of acquisition of natural assets for immediate human needs in the expense of degrading environmental conditions, land use impacts on environment includes alteration  on atmospheric composition, the hydrological cycle land cover and biological diversity. Collaboration is need to forestall this greatest environmental issues by bring; land use planners, hydrologist, agronomists, architects from Kalenjin to develop land use practices that provide both economic and environmental welfares.
Kalenjin need also to stand the test and co create to meet this challenge by developing regulation and policies on land use that are grounded in law, science, economics, psychology and politics. Having more experts trained the environmental and land use law programs thus developing leaders with skills to put sound policies into practices at all levels of government.

URBAN SPRAWL
World Bank predicts that by 2033 most population would have shifted to an urban setting or a town. Thus the future urban centers have dramatic environmental issues waiting on. urban sprawl refers to the uncontrolled expansion of urban areas into neighbouring regions adjoining the edge of a city to accommodate its growing population is a low density, automobile dependent development beyond the edge of service and employment areas, Urban sprawl measured by U-index which is a quota of the total watershed area that is covered by either urban or agricultural lands.
There is need for Kalenjin to prioritize the urban planning forming an outlandish monitoring an evaluating team to caution the sprawling and village slums and learn from the South African towns and the Kiambu’s Tatu city and following other models of other cities in African that have exemplary town plan e.g. the Sergoit resort .
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE 8TH GOAL OF MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGS)
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as one of the agreement in 2000 by the United Nations member states: Kalenjin should be the frontrunners implementers 0f Ensuring environmental sustainability through the Integration of the principles of sustainable development into country’s  policies and programs also dealing with reverse the loss of environmental resources. Key monitoring of the various indicators which includes Proportion of land area covered by forest, Ratio of area protected to maintain biological diversity to surface area.
With reference to the 2010 (MDGs) progress report, Africa has low forest cover, Halve proportion without improved drinking water, halve proportion without sanitation and very high populations living in the slums for example the Kibera slum in Kenya, Khayelitsha in Cape Town and Amui Djor in Ghana all exhibiting environmental impacts of informal settlements, flying toilets, poor infrastructure and generally the conditions in the slums are surely a serious problem thus the need for Kalenjin to relook and by fronting and implementing this goal number eight .
 ENTREPRENEURSHIP ON ENVIRONMENT
Innovative ideas between the different counties in Kalenjin land in collaboration with other Kenyans  on the business ideas, opportunities and identification of market gaps especially those related to the environmental issues in which the various pollutants can be put to use in an economical way, Kalenjins can co create by pooling entrepreneurs together to come up with think-tongue and brainstorm on variant business ideas, assembling the necessary  resources to fund and nurture the brilliant ideas that protect our mother nature  .

WATER CRISIS
Water crisis is a situation where the available water within a locality is less than the region's demand. Though in some regions in Rift valley there is no water crisis but steps must be taken to circumvent one in the future. The major aspects of the water crisis are allegedly overall scarcity of usable water and water pollution, with over 80% of the world's population living in areas with threats to water security which is a shared threat to human and nature thus a pandemic. By 2025, this is expected to rise. The world's population is growing and water consumption is increasing, but water resources are decreasing. The world is running out of water." Many countries have been declared to be in a state of water stress or water scarcity, and some experts believe that in the future wars will be fought over water not oil.
Water crisis is manifested by inadequate safe drinking water, insufficient access to water for sanitation and waste disposal, Overuse and pollution of water resources harming biodiversity Regional conflicts over scarce water resources sometimes resulting in warfare. The core of the water crisis in Kalenjin is governance as the, saying "There is sufficient water for everyone" and "Water insufficiency is often due to mismanagement, corruption, lack of appropriate institutions, bureaucratic inertia and a shortage of investment in both human capacity and physical infrastructure these are exhibited in the Kenya, economists claim that the water situation has occurred because of a lack of property rights, government regulations and subsidies in the water sector, causing prices to be too low and consumption too high.
The Long-term solution to reduce draught or its damages is to shift from rainfall or green water to the dam reservoir or blue water and to make necessary plans to reserve waters in rainy periods for the less rainy years to in fact regulate the rainy- and dry-year consumption.
Our second major problem in water shortage rests on the consumption issue. Thus the time Kalenjin to encourages the cultivation of the items which need less water while on the other hand we must try to benefit from water's relative privilege in our agricultural economy on which we depend on. With the poor being the ones who suffer most, Water shortages can mean long walks to fetch water, high prices to buy it, food insecurity and disease from drinking dirty water, thus are severely impacted with regard to human health.

TOURISM
Tourism is wholly dependent on the environment, these calls for Kalenjin to protect the environment both the natural and man-made resources these constitute the primary source of tourism. Any degradation of the primary sources is likely to lead to a decline of tourism. Just like other destruction on these resources consequently lead to the decline in the tourism revenue. Kalenjin depend on tourism service sector and related spin-offs. The power of tourism on the economy is enormous and as a student of economics, I appreciate the value chain and my background as a native of a tourism country has offered me a good opportunity to see the huge potential in tourism, like other economic activities, tourism consumes resources. Today, tourism is one of the major economic activities in the world.
There’s need for Kalenjin to step in to the new front of tourism like ecotourism as a new approach in tourism in preserving the natural area, appreciating the cultural and natural history of environment, taking care not to disturb the integrity of the ecosystem and creating economic opportunities.
OVERPOPULATION
As the world hits population of 7 billion, overpopulation beckons and threatens heavily the environment and resulting into pressure on the existing natural resources to provide space for human living and existence thus the destruction of environment both Kalenjin  depend on tourism as source in revenue which bases itself on the environment.

Notes from ORSEA Conference

Notes from the 7th ORSEA conference 2011 hosted at Kenya International Conference Centre-KICC (amphitheater) on 13th -14th October and facilitated by three Universities University of Nairobi Schools of Business, University of Dar es salaam Business School and Makerere University Business School. Themed the role of operation research in the national visions within the east African and national regional integration brought researcher, academicians, scholars, business personalities, both private and public industry players on the day that also doubled up the international day of disaster reduction.
Nzuve made a formal introduction of years’ theme “role of operation research in the national visions within the east African and national regional integration” and emphasized that it will be a benchmark for the forthcoming conference; It will develop guidelines and recommendation. Kenya has to be a research hub since vibrant economies relies on research and quality control.
Prof Enos Njeru marking his remarks said that university of Nairobi is on the frontline in promoting academic who includes research, promoting business through the exchange of ideas from various actors in line with vision 2030 and being part of solution oriented from the discussion.
President of ORSEA Prof Isaac Mbeche made an interesting observation drawing the East African Community on the Link between leadership challenges in our region is closely link to poor research thanked the minister for making time to be there.
Min. W Oparanya the minister of state, planning and vision 2030 closely made his remarks especially highlighting the challenges of research in Africa, the need to adopt techniques which are most appropriate, seeking optimal point, showing interest on the common currency protocol. He also shared out that Kenya is implementing vision 2030 developed through an intensive research and a long term strategy to change Kenya into a middle income nation. The Minister finally before launching the ORSEA Journal which will be a milestone as a medium to exchange, challenge and research findings are communicated back,  gave building blocks of the vision 2030  (political pillar, social pillar and the economic pillar).
Keynote speakers whom included Prof James J Cochran of INFORMS, Mike Gorman of University of Dayton made their remarks that gave room for 47 paper to be presented later to be consolidated to relevant authorities as a basis and ground for their decision making.
The 2 day event was an informative one to young stakeholder like me in the research industry as this was an eye opener to world of research and links of research which includes theory, teamwork, application and professional participation. The repulsive nature of organization, topic selection, resource constraints Paper presented on the current issues and tackling real world problems gave me a wider scope of dealing handling them and finally a chance to Networking with the industry player of research.

140 FRIDAY

The Friday morning of March 9, 2012 played host to the #140Friday an ICT debate on a tagline of tech debate beyond 140 character this follows variant exchanges and discussion online about policy and local tech business on www.twiter.com on Kenya situation on techies. Moderated by Nation Media presenter @LarryMadowo and hosted by the incubation center @thenailab Bishop Magua centre courtesy of Sam Gichuru (@samgichuru). The panelist whom included @pkukubo (Paul Kukubo), @blongwe (Brian Longwe), @mbuguanjihia, @bangitito Bitange Ndemo @mikemachariaSST (Mike Macharia Seven Seas) and David Ndungu @davidndugu, they all made a ground setting for the debate that went worldwide to the trending list. Giving perspective on why government takes the culture of ICT local techies in regard to government tenders, opportunities and support. What’s there for the small tech entrepreneur at publicized Konza City? Paul Kukubo and the PS of information responded to the questions from more than 80 participants. Saying that Konza city is the best opportunity for the local firms to leverage on, on the tender topic they responded that local firms are awarded to a tune of 70 percent of the contracts
The debate so call to ICT Board can create a factoring fund to shield startups from LPO financing rates and the need provide product packaging and development to the talent and having Private sector to come together and help government separate the real business players in IT from Tenderpreneur. The PS emphasized on Moving from a complaining swing to solution swing. A session that ended from words of tunaomba serkali to tunaambia serkali and see a team to be formed to put up a concept policy white paper on the issues from the 140friday session for the action plan, and an ICT 5-year master plan from the government both to be ready before April and be presented during the Kenya Connected 2012 conference on 2nd -5th April, being suggested that this would be best handled through the ICT Sector of KEPSA As a young enthusiast in the ICT world this was an eye opener especially being the youth and seeing the future holds for us and the lucrative opportunities as we county-wise, this was a challenge and a called for event on a Friday morning. Dr. Julius Kipng’etich

Some of the points, sayings and thoughts selected from Dr. Julius Kipng’etich Director, Kenya Wildlife Service, since December 31, 2004, when he took over a scandal-plagued organisation with a deficit of Ksh 500 million plus.
His major guideline points includes .
Guard your reputation by being a person of integrity;
Network this is a social capital. It is your support system.
Leverage on technology; let it work for you;
Be strategic in your thinking.’ For us to be global and have a competitive advantage, a least 10% of the children who start primary education should reach university. Health has a direct impact on organizations and the economy. By improving governance, all other pillars of society will improve. This is a rallying call for all of us.
Finally Kenya has a blue print to be an economic powerhouse. Devolution of infrastructure has the potential of spreading investments to the rural areas beyond Nairobi and other major towns, but prudent management of the funds will ensure that they serve their intended purpose through what? 5 aspects of management
• Planning is essential in management of a country, county and its resources, borrowing the idea of v 2030.the development blue print.
• To achieve what has been planned
• People play a Major role in the actual management process. A people centered development... the right people in the right places to do the right jobs
• Directing is also crucial in management. Looked in three parts leadership [in relation to responsibilities], motivation and communication (the hallmark of any good leader is the ability to communicate with the people).
Our politics is a roll call of tribes: political power is structured around tribal arithmetic- to confront this demon requires a mindset change. This as we all know is never an overnight process
o Show leadership- influence other people.
o Strategic thinking –be unique.
o Leverage on technology-to multiply your efficiency
Top nations and corporations are driven by their visions but poor nations have poor visions or no visions and have no idea on how to be great Kenya and African countries have never had a vision to combat poverty among its citizenry. E.g. Singapore has set 2015 as her d-day to become knowledge based economy. India 2020 as a developed nation, Morocco had set 2010 to receive 10 million tourists annually
The lazy communities will be colonized, marginalized and exploited. The working communities will become the economic tigers Farmers are always losers. They are the algae in the food chain. They are the tools and goods of the smart investors! They are the donkeys and the slaves in the economic chain. They are willing to be exploited and milked dry in their ignorance.
Stealing, a tool of wealth creation is retrogressive and totally obsolete in the 21st century. Let’s embrace handwork, diligence and integrity Lets safe at least 40% of their income. If not possible we may have to involve external investors or strategic partners. Time has come to dismantle the worldview of cattle complex and the cattle rustling mentality and embrace global strategies. Our culture to be fashioned to feed Kenya and the enlarged market COMESA. The current rural and farm orientation that we are in should shift. A shift in strategy and paradigm must begin.
Medical tourism the great rift is such a resource, which gives both physical and psychological healing if taped and exploited it will put us in a class of our own. If the north rift can attract over 10 million tourists annually by 2030. But if we set up great economic institutions and systems e.g. the globalization of male circumsion calendar in December cultural tourism.

#VPmeetup

September the 1st the day I met the Kenya’s top online community. They included the top tweeps, Top Bloggers and Critics also in the house include some of the respectable media personalities. The meeting hosted at the Nairobi incubation lab that nurtures the Kenya’s ICT talents by mentoring and trainings and providing public free high speed internet. Organized by the vice president of Kenya dubbed is the #VPmeetup. Being one the hundred chosen for the meetup and engage the vice president on the one on one session. My questions to him the aspect of ict village like that of Machakos how do you plan to replicate others in the inland parts of Kenya.
#VPmeetup gave a window of opportunity to me, to interact the people I knew behind the gadgets. People who are of great respect in the Kenya society. It was great exposure for a young blogger being also one of the youngest in the house. But determined I made friends quickly meeting one of my age mate Klein the vice president son. Asset manager at a bank one of the ktn presenters and other including the vice president spokesman whom we spoke in kalenjin. To Kenya’s top software developer whom I made contact with them e.g. ushahidi and. The vice president delivered a speech on the impact of ICT on Kenya’s economy.
Social media is a component in this age of entrepreneurship and marketing thus a growing need in the economics front. With new applications that watches the market and informs one of the happenings. Other machines are currently mobile controlled.
The LinkedIn community a professional site one they must have social account for the job seekers a good place to enrich your network. ICT is said to be one the drivers of the economy in tip age. Could this be the move of Kenya’s politics to the social media? With many of the politicians joining the online community for political platform. On coincidence the dinner with the pm was on concurrently on the same day. This entry of politics in the social media could be drifting it to the political media. With history like the president of America being one known to have heavily benefited from the social media on his political platform.

Its worth to note also that cyberspace is the next playground for terrorists. With future inclination towards software bombs. Information systems and icts that are poorly secured remain vulnerable to cyber attacks and intrusions. Terrorist can use deadly viruses. Hacking tools and malicious software to initiate I have got great passion of ICT knowing that it’s the driver of the economy in this age. Their evil plans With more companies embracing social media in communicating with their clients e.g. safaricom care. Social media seems to closely play with Kenya’s politics savvy politicians embracing internet to sustain campaigns
Re Tracing oneself

Then who is to be blamed ? Us, The devil, Church, Government or the Parents? The big deal is denial. Accepting reality is the first step of getting developed and getting healed: The way forward! Can we just accept that pain is part of survival? Its normal being dumped in relationship do we accept that way? There exist a big difference between the will and desire. The reality checks we can't make a move before we check our reality and back to the drawing board. Are will living by the proverb once bitten twice shy. Establishing a one's template. We are living on borrowed template. My question to you ladies and gentlemen which template are you living on? Do we have a standard template? Only in Christ your template can change. Thou other factor are e.g. education and business. Template of propelling your life. World operate on force that are pulling us apart. Travelling is the greatest eye opener. you cannot say die while you are a youth member. A change of template is a change of one's life. I’m a firm believer that a youth can change our future.
